Indy Indulgence: .400 Hitter for Futures

Posted on 28 March 2010 by Kevin Lager

Stay tuned for the five worst trades in baseball history, but first…

In Indy Indulgence, Kevin Lager whispers sweet nothings in to the ears of Independent Baseball Fans.  Sure, some people can get all the baseball they need from the rigid structure of “Bud” Selig’s heavily commercialized and painstakingly sanitised Major Leagues, but the most sinister of us also crave Indy Ball, where trades are weird, hecklers are louder than the PAs, the players exist in real life, and dammit – it just feels like home.

Yes, xolager took these brilliant photos of #4 Nelson "Mr 400" Castro

For the 2009 Golden League Champion Calgary Vipers, SS Nelson Castro batted a record .410 while leading the league in hits, triples, stolen bases, and slugging percentage. For good measure, he was second in the league in RsBI and runs.

Also, my friend Sarah wants to marry him.

Well, Sarah, I’ve got some bad news. According to the Yuma Sun, the reigning GBL MVP is off to the rival Yuma Scorpions for, get this, future considerations.

  1. This reminds me of when Ted Williams batted .406 for the Red Sox in 1941, and was then traded to the Philadelphia Athletics for future considerations.
  2. This hearkens back to 1934 when Lou Gehrig won the triple crown and then was shipped off to the St. Louis Browns for two front-row tickets to see the premier of The Gay Divorcee, plus a tub of popcorn (no butter).

Jeff Pearlman, a good baseball guy

Posted on 26 March 2010 by TheNaturalMevs

Last night I had the opportunity to interview New York Times best-selling author and Sports Illustrated writer Jeff Pearlman. He was a guest on The Baseball Show, and we talk everything from Barry Bonds to Dwight Gooden to Darryl Strawberry to J.D. Drew and HGH still being in baseball.

Jeff was not only extremely humble, but really understands that we’re all just another human being on this earth and no one should be righteous to another. I have a lot of respect for him after getting to know him a little bit.

Baseball fans might remember; this is the man who did the controversial John Rocker ’7-train’ interview in SI a few years back. This guy has done some very big things in terms of writing about the sport. He’s a great writer.

But zero sense of ‘do you know who I am’ from Pearlman. Good dude, talking some good baseball with us last night.

VIDEO: Battery Stance Guy, An Ode To MLB Wife Beaters

Posted on 18 March 2010 by David Chalk

Sadly, there always seems to be a timeliness to domestic violence and baseball.  This week, former Yankee Chuck Knoblauch pleaded guilty to assault on his common-law wife.

So, who doesn’t want to watch backyard impressions of Miguel Cabrera, Brett Myers, Julio Lugo,  Wil Cordero, Chuck Knoblauch, Jose Canseco, Elijah Dukes, Kirby Puckett,  Darryl Strawberry, Barry Bonds, and Babe Ruth?  Wouldn’t we all rather see grown men hitting batting stance guy instead of hitting a woman?

From 12 Angry Mascots, the same folks who brought us MLB’s Working Poor, Starring Devil Rays Fernando Perez and Mets COO Jeff Wilpon’s Video Blog: Burgers and Acquisitions.

PODCAST: Chalk & Mevs talk Ivan Calderon, DEVIL-Rays, & the like

Posted on 12 March 2010 by TheNaturalMevs

Last night Chalk stopped by The Baseball Show by Diamond Hoggers to talk for a bit. We ended up getting off the beaten path. When I say we got off the beaten path, we talk about Ivan Calderon hitting for the video game home run cycle; as well as a variety of other topics.

If you’re bored at work today, give it a whirl. Good and wholesome baseball talk.

I had the idea to compare some Oscar contenders to baseball players and teams.  Back in the day, I’d hit you with 35 or so picture analogies just to show I could, but I’ll just stick to the best ones.  Take a looksee, explanations after the jump.

Get Your Very Own MLB Hug-E-Gram!

Posted on 19 February 2010 by Ethan Jaynes

Get Your Very Own MLB Hug-E-Gram! I bet Bud Selig wishes he had these to pass around in 94. MLB fans get so touchy when you mess around with the game they love / used to love. So, whenever you fear that the towering shot that was just hit was steroid induced, put on your MLB Hug-E-Gram, press play and forget about it. There is no way that any players are using steroids. Period! They are just most likely using HGH or some version of “The Clear” etc…

Supplies are going fast! It was a loosey goosey era. Forget about it!
The Tiger Woods Hug E Gram is also available.
